I Want to Be Like Darlene

I learned recently that along with everything else she does, Darlene also cuts all of her boys' hair. Sound impressive? Well, in an effort to save money, tonight I decided to try and cut Elijah's hair myself...and (again) I wonder, "How does Darlene do it?"

Ed went for a walk in the woods to try to retrieve a lost Kincko glove. I got dinner started while Elijah emptied the box of dog bones and stuffed them into the pockets of my pants. I eventually extracted all of these bones from my 4 pockets: He was happy as a clam (weird expression- are clams happy?) until I scooped him up and plunked him in the tub. Although his only other experience with a haircut was non-traumatic, he must have smelled a novice in me. He immediately melted down and started screaming. I had to work fast, and the end result is definitely less hair than he started the day with. It might not be even, but I saved ten bucks. Worth it? The jury is still out.
Look, he's so embarrassed that he won't even open his eyes for the camera:
Doesn't he look less like a baby and more like a little man every day? Well, except for the rash he has all over his chin from excessive drooling.
I don't know, Darlene. Somehow you cut their hair and they actually look CUTE. I don't know how you do it.

Just LOOK at that hack job!
We are really looking forward to our trips to NH and RI at the end of this month. Can't wait to see Grammie, Nana, Grampy, and others.

Update: my Dad completed his first round of daily (!) chemo and 5-days-per-week radiation. Pretty aggressive regime, from what I understand. He went for a scan (Cat Scan?) yesterday to see if the tumor has shrunk, and make sure the cancer has not spread. He meets with his doctors on Monday to go over the scan results...So we're keeping our fingers crossed that the past couple of months have been successful. He is much happier with the port and chemo pump removed, and enjoys being able to shower again :-) Can't wait to see him in a few weeks.
We learned that Fairfax Elementary School has an "Open Tot" gym on Saturday mornings during the winter. Ed, Elijah and I went for the first time last weekend and it was really fun! Elijah got to run and climb and play while I met some other Fairfax moms. That's nice, since my regular Mom's group (Chittenden County Moms and Babes Meetup) is based in Chittenden County- it's great to meet some closer families with children. I didn't take any pictures, since no one else was and I didn't want to be the "dorky new Mom in the group!" I'll see if I can sneak a few next Saturday... :-)
Well, back to work...

I was just about to email you and tell you that we needed to see some new pics of Elijah!
His haircut looks just fine :) Jim also cuts Kyle's hair - in the summer he just shaves it all off - nice and easy!
Elijah IS looking more and more like a big boy now. Soon he will lose those adorable chunky cheeks and thighs :(
One question...how does he know NOT to eat those dog bones?!

How did I delete this??? Anyway...

Your haircut story had me rolling on the floor. I tried cutting my own bangs once and cried at the end result... never again! Tyler cuts his own hair though, and seems to be an expert. Maybe you could just shave Elijah's hair like Ty's - especially in the summer!

Holy Cow! I love this blog post named after me!

Trial and error, my dear. Lots of trial and error. And when they're toddlers, they're so cute it doesn't matter what you do to their hair. You did a great job with Elijah. He looks more handsom than ever. I ended up buying some clippers with different attatchments and it makes it much easier.

That's so funny that he was putting dog bones in your pockets while you were fixing dinner. I can just imagine that game. Hey, whatever gets dinner on the table.

We'll be thinking of you, your family and your Dad and hoping for good news.

Elijah's haircut looks just fine! It does make him look older.

We, too, are looking forward to your visit at the end of the month.

Grammie says, "Elijah looks very cute!"

Love to your dad. Hope he gets good news on Monday.

Paula: Elijah tried a dog bone once and didn't like it. Taht's the only reason why he doesn't eat them :-)

I once ate Dog food because Cedric paid me a dollar. I'm sure he will deny this but that's because he has no memory left. It's like his brain is too crammed with names of birds to remember normal stuff.
In any event, you are VERY brave to cut Elijah's hair and hey, he looks pretty snappy to me! He looks like a little boy now.
Estelle has so little hair that she has only had 3 haircuts in her life and she is 2 1/2. I should add that all 3 have been at my hairdresser!
Martha cut my hair for my entire childhood. Then Dubie Blatt's sister cut it. Then Mom's second cousin Paulette Perron. See? You are continuing the tradition to keep it close to home!
Good luck to your dad, lord knows we know what you are going thru.
