A Summer of Firsts, and Dead Pop Icons

The first "First" worth acknowledging is our first stretch of real summer weather. And not a moment too soon1 We have had several dreary, rainy days...But finally! A 5-day stretch of reasonably nice weather! Reason enough to celebrate with Elijah's first Fudgsicle:

Looking like an inebriated sports fan...We're Number One!Enjoying an apple in the shade:

The weather's been so nice that someone in our family has been walking around with no pants on.
Another big "First" was Ed's first-ever colonoscopy, which has been a dark cloud hanging over Ed. Because of my Dad's colon cancer diagnosis, I was not about to let Ed off the hook.I was absolutely insistent that he follow through with this appointment. Honestly, it wasn't the procedure that he was dreading- it was the day of fasting/cleansing that precedes the colonoscopy...which includes NO solid food, NO coffee, and the consumption of 1 gallon of a prescription solution that is meant to...um...cleanse the colon, if you know what I mean.
I guess they administer a sedative prior to the procedure, which made Ed somewhat "loopy"- he is kind of obnoxious in a funny way to medical personnel anyway. His nurse's last name was Perron, so he made her recount her family tree so he could find possible connections (none), and he vaguely recalls telling the doctor (during the colonoscopy!) that he shot a moose.
We thought we'd celebrate the end of that ordeal by going out to dinner at the Smuggler's Notch Mountain Grille, which is located on the resort.
It was a stunning evening:
A lot goes on at Smuggs during the summer time. It's a big family vacation spot. After dinner, we went to check out some of the childrens' activities. There was a potato sack race:That guy in the crazy outfit was the M.C., and is known as the "Fun Meister"- a.k.a. Gary Loomis, who Ed believes graduated from MMU with either Lisa or Cedric. There were also pony rides! Elijah watched with interest:
And then moved in for a closer look:
The pony rides were only $5, so we asked Eli if he wanted to try it, since he is crazy about animals. He nodded emphatically. He seemed to really enjoy his first pony ride:

After that, we ran into some big furry mascot bear. Elijah surprised us by wanting to snuggle right in with the bear. I would have thought he'd be a little afraid. But obviously not!

Finally we hit the playground:

Not really designed for 35-year-old women.

Lots of Pop Icons are kicking the bucket these days- yesterday was Ed McMahon and today was Farrah Faucet and Michael Jackson. Huh.
I wondered if my sisters remember the Farrah Faucet "head" that we used to play with in Maine. Sort of a life-sized plastic head that came with makeup, so you could practice applying her makeup and styling her hair. Do you remember?
I have fond memories of Michael Jackson when he was younger and normal, before he tried to become white. I was crazy about him. I vividly recall a Christmas where my prized gift from Santa was his "Thriller" album. We actually learned of Michael Jackson's death from the aforementioned "Fun Meister," who announced it between rounds of wheelbarrow races.
It always seems so strange when a popular famous person dies...

Yes, I think Gary Loomis was in my class.

We loved all the pictures of Elijah and of you and Ed. I am jealous of five reasonably good days of weather. Today we had our first reasonably good day after weeks of rain it seems.

Love the pictures of Elijah eating the apple and fudgecicle. So cute. Ed must be relieved that his colonoscopy is over and done with. Isn't that something that you only have to have done like every 5 years?

I've always thought it was sad to see clips of MJ when he was such a young, cute, talented little kid and then wonder what went terribly wrong with him when he got older. He was such a train wreck, it's no surprise he died young.

Elijah looks just like his cousin Brandon did at that age in the very first picture you posted of him eating his chocolate pop!!
Looks like he's going to follow in his Mama's footsteps & grow up to be a lover of "most" animals :) Glad to see that he wasn't afraid to hop on that horse - maybe I'll finally get a horseback riding partner now!!!
Also glad that Ed survived his first ever colonoscopy :) You were smart to make him follow through with it. Have you had yours yet? Shortly after Dad was diagnosed I talked to my OBGYN who suggested that I get checked when I turn 35...NOT looking forward to that!
I must tell you..I laughed & laughed & laughed when I read how you spelled Farrah's last name. Faucet. HAHAHAH! :) I do remember that big head! Although I was more into my Brooke Shields Barbie Doll at the time..
I won't even get started on the death of Michael Jackson. I'm very sad about the way his tragic life played out! He was never allowed to be a child - & was a superstar at Kyle's age. Imagine that?! He was born with such an amazing talent that later plaqued him. Years of mental abuse (and possibly physical) eventually knocked him down & sadly he was never able to stand back up. I'll always remember him for his music, & the way he held the world in the palm of his heads for so long. I'll remember him for his talent, not his wrong doings & poor decisions. That's up to him & the big guy to deal with now! I feel for his 3 young children & the life that Michael should've had, but never did. Very sad story! (so much for not getting started on the subject!)

These pics of Eli are amazing... I love the fudgcicle (sp?) pic, the drunken pic, the snuggle-bear pic and the pony pic! All so very sweet!

I got the MJ news on my cell phone yesterday and had to stop to catch my breath. It's not that I've been a huge fan of his in the past 15 years, but back in the day I loved that guy! My first poster in my bedroom at 5-years-old was of him!

Glad to hear that Ed survived yesterday...

Will we see you at the big move tomorrow?

OMG, Paula- I went back and looked at my blog post and saw how I spelled Farrah's last name. THAT is hysterical! So funny, in fact, that I'm leaving it just like that!
Thanks for pointing that out to me, I had a great laugh at myslef!

I wasn't pointing it out in a "bratty little sister" way either..I thought it was so innocent and funny!!! I actually had tears in my eyes..!
We'll miss seeing you this weekend, but hope to see you soon.

Great pictures and good job Ed for surviving your colonoscopy! Brandon agrees that the procedure isn't as bad as the prep work..that is torture ( for the whole family!)Brandon has already had two colonoscopies and many more to go.. Oh well..that's life. And Paula, my dr said the same thing..With Dad's history, and Brandon's history the procedures should stat at 35 and every five years after ( glad we have a few years before that time comes!)

Sandy, the photo of you and Elijah is a keeper!! You both have that winning smile!! For the record, Gary L was a talented and funny comedian. He played Fyedka, and I was his girlfriend, Chava, in MMU's Fiddler on the Roof. I had to hold his hand, but I wasn't really attracted to him, and it gave me the creeps. I was only a 9th grader, and he, an 11th grader( I think).Love,Martha
